About Cheryl Mayes
Cheryl Mayes is a proven leader, longtime community advocate, and dedicated public servant who proudly represents District 6 on the Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) Board of Education. Currently serving her second term, Cheryl brings more than 30 years of experience across education, government, community engagement, and organizational leadership—all grounded in a deep commitment to students, families, and neighborhoods.
A Record of Public Service and Leadership
Cheryl’s career reflects a consistent focus on service, accountability, and results. She previously served as District Director for the U.S. House of Representatives in Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District, where she managed constituent services, coordinated with federal, state, and local agencies, and ensured that community voices were heard and addressed.
In addition to her government service, Cheryl is the Founder and Principal Consultant of My Toolbox Consulting, a Nashville-based leadership development and training firm she launched in 2015. Through her work, she has supported individuals, nonprofits, and organizations in strengthening leadership capacity, improving workplace culture, and advancing professional growth.
Champion for Students and Families
As a School Board member, Cheryl is known for being community-driven and student-centered. She is a strong advocate for equitable access to quality education, safe and supportive school environments, and policies that ensure every student is known, supported, and prepared for success beyond graduation.
Cheryl believes that effective school governance requires collaboration, transparency, and fiscal responsibility. She works closely with fellow board members, educators, parents, and community partners to make informed decisions that prioritize student outcomes while respecting taxpayers and families.
Deep Community Roots
Cheryl’s leadership extends well beyond the boardroom. She has spent decades building relationships with community organizations, employment service providers, educators, and civic leaders throughout Nashville. Her work often takes her directly into neighborhoods—listening, problem-solving, and connecting residents with resources and opportunities.
She is also an experienced event planner and civic leader, having served in key roles with organizations such as the Davidson County Democratic Women and as Chair of the Nashville MLK Day Committee, helping to coordinate one of the city’s most significant annual commemorations. As a native of Nashville and a proud graduate of Nashville Public Schools, Cheryl Mayes brings both lived experience and proven leadership to her vision for District 6.
Education and Values
Cheryl holds a Master of Business Administration in Organizational Leadership from Lipscomb University and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Tennessee State University. Her educational background informs her thoughtful, people-centered approach to leadership and decision-making.
At the core of Cheryl’s work is a belief that strong public schools strengthen communities—and that leadership should always be accessible, ethical, and accountable.
